Welcome to Across the Country with Amanda. In this series, I'm talking about underrated songs in country music. These are songs that didn't reach the top 20 on the charts, but they should have been bigger radio hits.
Conway Twitty, he was known for his ability to speak to women through his songs. And this song that we're going to talk about, fits right along with that. She's got a man on her mind. This was from the last album that Conway Twitty released before he passed away. And Conway, he had a remarkable career. Just in the 80s and 90s alone, He scored 27 top 10 hits.
Both Crazy in Love and I Couldn't See You Leaving, Those both went to the top 5 in 1991. The lead single from Even Now, it was called One Bridge I Didn't Burn.
It peaked at number 57, which was Conway's lowest charting song since 1967. She's Got a Man on Her Mind features Vince Gill on background vocals. You'll also hear the background vocals of Curtis Wright. He co-wrote the song and actually released his own version just a few years before in 1989.
His version would go on to peak in the 30s. With this hot new country style emerging at country radio, we saw a lot of the 70s, and 80s, they begin to kind of stall at radio. a lot of them were now being branded as legacy acts, and some of them tried to recreate their sound to fit in with what was popular at radio.
And Conway Twitty, he was one of the few that were able to achieve a mainstream sound that worked well. This record is produced exceptionally well, and it didn't come across as trying to be something he wasn't. It was a natural fit in the contemporary country world. This song holds up a lot better than some of the material from back then that now sounds dated.
Conway's untimely death was absolutely tragic and such a loss for country music, I would have liked to think that he could have hung around country radio and maybe achieve success like we saw Kenny Rogers do in the late 90s with The Greatest and Buy Me A Rose,
And Conway left quite a legacy on country music. Towards the end of the decade, just a few years after he passed away, Conway would receive induction into the Country Music Hall of Fame.
The album, Even Now, was actually pretty hard to find back in the early 90s when it came out. And you won't find this song on any of his greatest hits compilations from back then, but you can find it on Spotify or wherever you stream your music
If you find any of the box collections that were released right after Conway's death, you will find this song on CD there. Let me know if you remember this song and any forgotten favorites from Conway that should have been bigger hits.
